The Wegmans Appeal

Being a New York City native, my first trip to Wegmans, the central New York based family owned super supermarket, was last semester, during my first freshman semester at Syracuse University.  I was slightly put off by the slightly sinister brick exterior, fearing that it wasn't going to live up to my peers' recommendations, but was converted when I stepped through the automatic double doors into a colorful, over-stocked supermarket heaven.
Since then, I've only been twice (largely due to the fact that I don't have a car and it is nearly impossible to get there without one), but each time I'm amazed by the endless rows of packaged food, overflowing baskets of fresh produce, and constantly smiling employees.  Simply browse their website and you'll find everything from a "how to" guide for poaching to information about their nationally ranked careers; voted 2nd Best Company to Work for by Fortune in 2006, and 1st the previous year.  They seem to post information and news about everything they do behind the scenes, and it's all good news.
In fact, it's very difficult to find bad or incriminating news about Wegmans anywhere.  Besides the maltreatment of hens in their poultry farms, which is an issue currently being protested and explored, Wegmans seems to be the best supermarket in everything.  They give college scholarships to employees, publicize honorable press releases on their website, inform customers about product recalls, and make nutrition and diet information available.  I've heard they even have a dog park for those special canines who live in the area.
To me, this sounds like too much of a good thing.  And although I have not had a bad experience at a Wegmans to date, I feel that there must be some heavy sacrifices being made to support all the good stuff.
